Seaside Trail

Back

Discovering a wild coast on one of the most beautiful shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Long sandy beaches alternate with tiny hidden coves which we discover when riding along the ancient tracks, paved by the Romans. This track rarely moves away from the sea, only to plunge into the maquis where the hooves of the horses release wonderful perfumes. This trail ride is dedicated to people who love the sea and horses. The noise of the waves will hardly ever disappear, except when we enter the maquis which the track sometimes crosses to get around a pile of rocks falling in the sea. The sea is omnipresent: from the third day onwards we never lose sight of it. Thanks to the low and perfumed vegetation, shaped this way by the wind, each turn reveals a different sight as far as the eye can see. The emotional bonds with your horse will get stronger as time goes by: you will swim with it, gallop along the beaches or on soft tracks, you will sleep near it in the bivouac, in forgotten coves or under a tamarisk. This shore, well protected, has not suffered from the touristy development. Discovering it is like immersing oneself in a wild world, full of beauty and perfumes. It is learning what Corsica and the Mediterranean Sea were like before our centuries’ barbarism and understanding how these paradises are fragile and how important it is to protect them.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Sartene
You arrive at the equestrian center of Olva, in Sartène. The horses and the equipment will be presented to you after you had dinner with the entire group. You spend the night in a lodging.
Day 2 Sartene - Granace
We use the old transhumance routes to Granace, a small village in the middle of the odorous maquis. We cross the bridge of Spina Cavallu. This is a beautiful Genuan bridge which connects the banks of the Rizzanese. We stop for a brief siesta in the shadow of huge alders. We arrive in Granace in the late afternoon.
Day 3 Granace - Ortolo
We leave for the valley of Ortolo. We still use the old travel routes, the “i chassi” which cross the maquis and the oak forests. We are at quite a distance from the motorways when we pass Sartène. We ride on to the highest point of the valley of Ortolo. We pause for some time and travel further to the glittering sea which beckons us in the distance through the trees.
Day 4 Ortolo - Caniscione
We reach the bottom of the valley, but we have to climb through the forest and the meadows to arrive at the sea again. Today we are going to explore some of the best hidden beaches of Corsica. Small creeks alternate with spacious beaches. The small lagoons are host to migratory birds and other rare species. We bivouac on the beach where an extraordinary silence and feeling of peace greets us.
Day 5 Caniscione - Tralicetu
We leave from Caniscione and go to Tralicetu. We don’t lose sight of the sea anymore from now on. We ride along the endless beach of d’Erbaghju; a magnificent gallop in the surf, the guide leading the way, and the taste of salt on our lips. The other lagoons are splendid. We visit Murtoli and its fortified houses, the lion and tour of Roccapina. We arrive not too late at Tralicetu to be able set up our camp for the night and enjoy the pleasures the sea has to offer.
Day 6 Tralicetu - Cali di Conca
The trail leads us along the coast. We ride through the maquis with constant view on the sea. Every touch, how soft it may be, spreads the enticing smells even further. Small bays of white sand alternate with little pebbles which were grinded by the waves. Just next to the sea we pass the tour of Sénetosa. We again plunge into a different world. The sound of the hooves of our horses resounds strangely in the court yard. We discover small gardens, a tiny harbour, and a maze of streets which all lead to the sea, but all with their own purpose. The paved roads remind us of the Roman conquest. This path leads us to Cala di Conca, dominated by ancient ruins. This deserted place once thrived. We stop for the night at this magical place, next to an azure blue lagoon, on a white sandy beach.
Day 7 Cala di Conca - Sartene
We turn our backs to the sea to head back to Grossa. It seems as if time had stopped here. The granite houses, the small gardens, the Roman church; everything bathes in a perfect harmony. We chose again the ‘i chassi’, which interconnect the different villages. They are boarded with blackberry bushes and no doubt you will find it difficult to resist the temptation. We depart from Tivulaghju, a tiny village on the mountain ridge which dominates the Valinco Bay. We see once again the glimmer of the sea in the distance and begin our descent. We pause for some time in Chiave, a beautiful town dating from the middle ages, which rises above the sea. We arrive at the beach of Portigliolo and enjoy a final gallop in the surf. We can only follow the coastline further to Baracci, the end of this journey.
Day 8 Departure
After breakfast we have to say goodbye to each other and the horses. And maybe there is still some time left for a final swim in the Mediterranean Sea.
