Coast Trail - Ireland

Back

In the heart of a contrasting landscape, where the mountains meet the sea, and green land surrounds the lakes you will find one of Ireland's most unusual regions, Connemara, a land both wild and tame. Connemara is a vast region where you will meet a very special man, Willie Leahy, who will be your guide during a week or more of trekking through the Gaelic west. For beginners and experienced riders alike, Willie provides a suitable horse and leads you to the discovery of the Connemara Trail. The Connemara and Coast Trails operate every alternative week from the end of April to the end of September, but during July and August they operate both Trails each week, starting with the Connemara Trail. A walk in the surf and sand in Ireland

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

Visit a Famine Village - Meet at eleven at the Great Southern Hotel in Galway and drive to Ballynahinch near Clifden (one hour approx.) Packed lunch before starting the four hour ride to Shannadonnell. We ride across the mountains towards the beautiful bay of Cashel, where we stop for a drink at Boulger's Pub, after which we ride to the hidden Ridge homestead deep in the mountains. After a ten minute drive we reach the village of Cashel where we stay for the night.

Day 2

Willie's Mountain Day - In the morning there is a four hour ride to Carna, mostly over Willie's mountain range. The scenery has to be seen to be believed. We will have lunch at the beach house in Carna. In the afternoon we explore the coastline and we will have the opportunity to canter on the beaches and big commonage. We leave the horses in a field near the beach house and we drive back to Cashel for the second night.

Day 3

Ride Into the Sea - We offer an unforgettable special day spent riding on the beach. The day starts with a ride along the shore. A break for lunch at the house after swimming the horses in the sea. After lunch we ride to the beach on the other side of the island with fabulous views of the Aran Islands. These new surrounds are different than we've seen all week.

Day 4

Sea crossing to the Finish Island - Tide permitting, we will ride on a beach again before crossing the mountain and having a packed lunch on the way. We will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the finest old Irish music and dancing which is unique to this area. At the end of the day, we will reach Screebe Lodge, the old shooting and fishing lodge of Ballynahinch Castle.

Day 5

To The Mountain Top - From Screebe Lodge we ride to a mountain village, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon we ride to the mountain top, where we overlook the blanket bog, pitted with tiny loughs and reaching right down to the edge of the shredded coastline. In the evening we reach Shanafeistin where the horses will graze and we drive to Oughterard to spend the night.

Day 6

The Forest Trail - Starting a little before eleven o'clock, we enjoy a long canter on soft forest roads before lunch. Beautiful Lough Corrib comes into view as we start our last ride to Cloonabinnia a few miles west of Galway. "Now we are moving slowly back into reality, into our everyday life, which makes us appreciate how peaceful and magic Connemara had been. If possible, we would always like to come back". The horses stay at Cloonabinnia for the week-end and we drive to Galway (15 minutes) for the last night. Those who have booked for a second week’s trekking might spend a day exploring Galway and its vicinity. We will meet again on Monday.
