Connemara Trail - Ireland

Back

In the heart of a contrasting landscape, where the mountains meet the sea, and green land surrounds the lakes you will find one of Ireland's most unusual regions, Connemara, a land both wild and tame. Connemara is a vast region where you will meet a very special man, Willie Leahy, who will be your guide during a week or more of trekking through the Gaelic west. For beginners and experienced riders alike, Willie provides a suitable horse and leads you to the discovery of the Connemara Trail. The Connemara and Coast Trails operate every alternative week from the end of April to the end of September, but during July and August they operate both Trails each week, starting with the Connemara Trail. Riding across the green lands of Ireland

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

A Trip back in Time - Meet at noon in Galway at the Great Southern Hotel and drive to Cloonabinnia starting point (20 mins. drive). The ride will take us through strange rock formations similar to those of the famous Burren in County Clare. At the end of the day, we enjoy a lovely stop for tea on the grounds of a 13th Century Aughnanure Castle, then ride the last two miles to let the horses free in their night pasture and return to the hotel in Oughterard.

Day 2

Up into the Mountains - Start around twelve o'clock for the impressive ride to Maam Cross. It will take about six hours over mountains and across bogs. In the evening we will travel on the old abandoned Galway-Clifden railway for an exciting gallop. Lunch in the open air as it will be for the rest of the week. The horses stay at night in a field by a lake in Maam Cross while we drive back for our last night in Oughterard.

Day 3

In the Middle of Connemara - Start around half past eleven for a most beautiful seven hours ride from Maam Cross to Ballynafad, a few miles from Ballynahinch. We first enjoy a long canter along the railway and then start going up into the mountains. Lunch on a small village green before tackling the afternoon mountain. Late in the afternoon we will stop for a refreshing cup of tea before the last gallop of the day. We leave the horses grazing in Ballynafad and drive to Clifden for the night.

Day 4

A Canter Along The Old Railway - Six hours ride offers a great variety in beautiful scenery and the opportunity of long gallops. It will take us to Ballyconneely, on the sea, south of Clifden. On the way in the morning we will stop for a drink in Ballynahinch Castle built in the 15th century, ancestral home of the Martyn family. Lunch by a small cottage on the railway. In the afternoon we will reach the sea, leave the horses in a field and drive to Clifden.

Day 5

Unforgettable Beach Rides - A full day on the fantastic Mannin Beach; you will canter, jump (optional) over small stone-walls and sandy banks, and swim with the horses. This last day is most enjoyable and we would like everybody, to spend the day together on the beach.

Day 6

Leprechaun Day - We ride along the coast and over the mountains overlooking the sea to the field where the horses will be spending the weekend getting in shape to begin the Coast Trail on the following Monday. Drive back for the last night in Galway. Customers who have booked for two weeks have the choice of staying in Clifden or Galway.
